Congratulations to Neena Sarin for earning a 2022 Fulbright Award. Neena immigrated to the US in 2002 from Punjab, India  and earned master’s degrees in Early Childhood / Special Education and in Bilingual Education.  She teaches at PS# 27 and was awarded the Jersey City Public Schools Outstanding Bilingual Teacher of the Year.  As a Fulbright Recipient she worked in India on curriculum for sustainability and climate change that is currently being piloted in schools and universities.  She will begin NJCU in Fall 2023 for her Supervisory Certification.  Go here to read the full story of Neena’s journey.

Our Assistive Technology Working Group was invited to present "ABC&D's to Empower Students with Technology Access" at the Innovations in Special Education Technology Conference at the New Jersey Association of Pupil Services Administrators. The focus was on ways to make toys and everyday devices more accessible. The Working Group is a collaboration between and the Educational Technology Department. Congratulations to Dr. Peter Mattaliano (Ed.D. Ed Tech Leadership, Cohort 5) principal of Mahatma K. Gandhi School, PS# 23 in Jersey City. His school earned a Verizon Innovative Schools Grant. The grant equipped the school with two lab of 3D printers, Virtual Reality technology, and a host of other high-tech equipment. Dr. Mattaliano is an MA and Ed.D. alum in Educational Technology at NJCU.  Mahatama Gandhi PS #23 is a Full Service Community School that provides clothes, food, medical and dental services for their students. Dr. Mattaliano said the vision for this project began in 2003 with his Masters Thesis in Educational Technology. Kudos and thank you Peter for all of your work in the Jersey City Community. 

The Educational Technology Department and A. Harry Moore School are working on a collaborative project to empower people with assistive and adaptive technology and to create assistive and adaptive technology through simple electronics and 3D printing projects.  To find out more about our projects and events, check out the project's web page.

Attend our Virtual Information Session and learn about our Ed.D. in Educational Technology Leadership-- Thursday February 23rd EST from 6-7pm.  Discuss the program with faculty and see how it strives to be the most student-centered doctoral program in the United States.

Congratulations Ariel Babcock! (MA, Ed Tech, 2019). She is the 2022-23 Teacher of the Year from Hudson County. Ariel is a history teacher at Weehawken High School. “Ariel is always a positive person, a positive influence, always has the right attitude about everyone and loves to make learning fun,” Weehawken High Principal Robert Ferullo said. “She puts significant time in her lesson plans to engage the students and connect with them and make them feel like they have value and have a voice."

In January 2023, the College of Education celebrated the Teacher Intern Program with its Partner Dinner. This innovative program, which is housed in the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Literacy, provides paid opportunities to all College of Education students to work alongside experienced teachers in real classrooms. Interns can begin as early as their freshman year and work up to 4 years in the classrooms.

The Partner Dinner brought together our K-12 partners and interns to celebrate the work done in the field. The dinner also served as a think tank to continue to improve and grow the program for our students and partner schools.

Dr. Judith L. Francis (Ed.D. in Educational Technology Leadership 2021, Cohort 6) was elected the President of the New Jersey Society for Public Health Education (NJSOPHE). NJSOPHE is an organization of health education professionals and students dedicated to improving health through practice and research. Dr. Francis is the Program Manager for the Central Jersey Family Health Consortium. Her duties include managing grant funded state initiatives centered around maternal and child health concerns, supervising community health workers, and creating digital resources for public health prevention and awareness programs.

Congratulations to NJCU COE Alum Zoila Correa who was recently appointed as the Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the South Orange Maplewood School District. Zoila was a math teacher in West New York, an Assistant Principal in Maplewood South Orange, and is the daughter of immigrants and a first-generation citizen.

Congratulations to NJCU COE Alum Theresa Maughan (MA '93 in Urban Education, Administration, and Supervision). She is receiving one of the nation's highest teaching honors-- 2023 Horace Mann Award for Teaching Excellence from the NEA Foundation. Theresa was the 21-22 New Jersey Teacher of the Year.

Dr. Elizabeth Uchegbu '05 (M.A. in Early Childhood Education) has written and illustrated a newly published book, entitled "A Pandemic Party". It was released by Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc. The story is told from a child's perspective and teaches that problems can sometimes be a challenge or a reason to be innovative. Uchegbu, an Irvington, N.J. resident, has been a preschool teacher for over 18 years.

Congratulations Dr. Doug Koch (Ed.D. in Educational Technology Leadership, Cohort 5, 2020) -- Recipient of the 2022 the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine Employee Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award. Dr. Koch is the Associate Director of Teaching and Learning at the College. He is also the President of the Northeast Digital Learning Association (NELDA).
