Maritime Workforce Development Programs
Middle-skill jobs, which require education beyond high school but not a four-year degree, make up the largest part of American鈥檚 and New Jersey鈥檚 labor market. Key industries in New Jersey are unable to find enough sufficiently trained workers to fill these jobs. Approximately 53% of jobs in New Jersey are classified as middle-skill. Many of the Top 100 Jobs in New Jersey by 2024 are middle-skill based. To help prepare individuals for a middle-skill job, The NJCU Center for Workforce and Community Development offers a Merchant Mariner Program.
The Merchant Mariner Program at Educate The Block at NJCU is a 3-month training program in partnership with the North Atlantic Mates, Masters and Pilots Union to train men and women for Union Seaman jobs in demand in the tri-state area. This program is designed to develop communication and vocational skills for this industry. We facilitate a combination of classroom training and hands-on activities so that students are prepared for a job with an employer-partner.
