Jay Arena, 鈥淎rt and Politics at a People鈥檚 University: My experience as a Fulbright Scholar at the Universidad Del Valle in Cali, Colombia鈥
A 2021 nationwide social movement, centered in Cali, disrupted Colombian politics, leading to the 2022 election of former guerrilla member Gustavo Petro as president. This talk will explore the role of students and education workers at the Universidad del Valle in driving these changes and challenging elite interests.
Jay Arena, a professor of sociology at the College of Staten Island, is the author of the recently published book Expelling Public Schools: How Antiracist Politics Enable Privatization in Newark and a longtime labor and community activist.
