NJCU Computer Science Student Presents at Electrical and Electronics Engineers Conference

JERSEY CITY, N.J. |  (NJCU) Computer Science student Stephanie Abanilla, a senior in the Class of 2024 from Jersey City, N.J. and County Prep High School, presented her STEM Summer Research Internship outcome at the prestigious Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) International Conference on Machine Learning and Applications (ICMLA), on December 15, 2023, in Jacksonville, Fla. 

Under the guidance of NJCU Computer Science Assistant Professor Moitrayee Chatterjee, Ph.D., she delved into the application of Federated Learning paradigm within the context of financial fraud detection 鈥 a domain where safeguarding data privacy stands as a paramount concern. 

She participated as Dr. Chatterjee鈥檚 research intern at NJCU鈥檚 STEM Summer Research Internship this summer. Abanilla, 22,  is majoring in Computer Science with a minor in Computer and Information Systems.

鈥淪tephanie is a quick learner who studied the cutting-edge concepts in AI like Federated Machine Learning and applied it to a contemporary cybersecurity concern of identifying fraudulent financial transactions,鈥 said Dr. Chatterjee. 鈥淎s a woman in Machine Learning (ML) driven cybersecurity research, her presentation at this international forum not only contributed to disseminating knowledge on application of ML but also represented the 鈥嬧媢ndergraduate research excellence at NJCU."
