Fellows of The New York Academy of Medicine are entitled to voting membership in the Academy’s specialty and interdisciplinary Sections. Dr. Chewey is now a member of the Section on Nursing. This workgroup seeks to advance the nation’s health, and specifically, the health of the people of New York City, through inter-professional communication and networks; community/public advocacy; leadership development, and education, research, and policy involvement.
Applications for Fellowship and Membership are subject to a rigorous review and approval process and must show evidence of strong performance in one or several of the health professional's roles of practitioner, teacher, scientist, researcher, administrator or citizen.
The New York Academy of Medicine is a leading voice for innovation in public health. Throughout its 175-year history, the academy has uniquely championed bold changes to the systems that perpetuate health inequities and keep all communities from achieving good health. Today, this work includes innovative research, programs, and policy initiatives that distinctively value community input for maximum impact. Combined with our trusted public programming, historic library, and with the support of our esteemed Fellows and Members, NYAM’s legacy as a public health leader continues.
The honor represents the second notable fellow recognition for Dr. Chewey who in 2018 was inducted into the National Academy of School Nursing by the National Association of School Nurses (NASN).
Earlier this year, Dr. Chewey was the recipient of the 2022 Teachers College at Columbia University Nursing Education Alumni Association’s (NEAA) Nursing Education Award by the NEAA Board of Directors, and recognized during the Stewart Conference on May 13, 2022.
Dr. Chewey holds a BSN from Seton Hall University, a M.S. in Health Sciences and Community Health Education from NJCU, and a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Nursing Education from Columbia University.
