JERSEY CITY, N.J. | The (NJCU) New Pathways Alternate Route program is now accepting Career and Technical Education (CTE) candidates for alternate route certification in New Jersey.

NJCU鈥檚 New Pathways Alternate Route program is a unique, completely online program for individuals with a bachelor's degree to become a certified teacher in New Jersey. The program includes 400 hours of training courses for new teachers.

The New Pathways Alternate Route program allows people who have career and technical experience to start teaching right away. Program participants complete the novice teacher training courses during their first two years of teaching and after earning successful teaching evaluations, are eligible for standard teacher certification. The online program enrolls candidates from all over the state.

Increasing the availability of vocational and technical courses in New Jersey public schools is a state priority at a time where New Jersey, like many other states, is grappling with a shortage of teachers in specific disciplines, and as such, NJCU鈥檚 New Pathways Alternate Route program will help to launch many more teaching careers.

鈥淭his addition of CTE into New Pathways is yet another example of how NJCU and participating community colleges continue their 20-year collaboration of training future NJ teachers,鈥 said Dr. Michael Edmondson, Dean of Professional Education and Lifelong Learning at the institution.

In addition to the new Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, New Pathways also has online programs for teachers in elementary school, secondary subject areas, English as a Second Language, and Special Education. The programs offer flexible choices for credit, non-credit, and pathways into NJCU graduate programs in the College of Education.
