UNIVERSITY PLACE:
In 2017, NJCU held a groundbreaking ceremony for the second of five mixed-used buildings at University Place, a $400 million redevelopment project that aims to create a unique sense of place between NJCU鈥檚 main campus and the adjacent neighborhood. The two new buildings will together have more than 300 market-rate apartments, more than 11,000 square-feet of transformative commercial space on West Side Avenue, and parking for 303 vehicles. In 2016, NJCU celebrated the ribbon-cutting of its West Campus Village Residence Hall. The new facility doubled the University鈥檚 capacity to accommodate residential students. Future construction will bring additional shops, a supermarket, and other retail amenities, along with ample on-street parking and garages. Also planned are academic and non- academic facilities, including a center for the performing arts.
The newly renovated and expanded Science Building is now open to students at NJCU and houses the Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences, and Physics departments. The building is equipped with 45 ultramodern teaching and research laboratories, a greenhouse, observatory, imaging center, cell culture lab, bio-informatics lab, and Geographic Information Science lab. The Science Building expansion project included a 40,000-square-foot, five-story addition and a 70,000-square-foot renovation of the existing Science Building in the center of the Main Campus.
