From the Director
In addition to complete operas, we like to do programs of scenes, like this one, which allow the singers to explore various characters and situations, thus strengthening their skills as singer-actors. They must put in a lot of work, from learning and memorizing their music, to exploring the stories and backgrounds of the characters they portray, to physicalizing the roles on stage. I am very proud of what these young people have accomplished.
We are sad to say that our original music director, David Mayfield, suffered an accident which kept him from being with us. Many of these scenes were selected by him and some he translated into English. He also taught the music to the singers. We owe him a great deal, and we wish him a quick recovery. Our thanks to Alla Milchtein, as well. In her first gig at NJCU, she stepped in and seamlessly took over the piano accompaniment, so that we never had to miss a beat.
